Sustainable Polyurethane Adhesives for Packaging and Footwear Solutions

April 23, 2026

The SustainPU project, funded by the Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness (IVACE+i) of the Generalitat Valenciana and by the European Union through FEDER funds, has reached its final phase after consolidating significant advances in the development of more sustainable, safer polyurethane adhesives that are compatible with the circular economy. The ITENE Technology Center has participated alongside INESCOP in research focused on formulating adhesives from biobased and renewable raw materials, validating their application in the packaging and footwear sectors.

Traditionally, polyurethane adhesives are produced from fossil-based materials, which results in a high carbon footprint and dependence on non-renewable resources. During the project, ITENE has managed to formulate adhesives using biobased polyols and diisocyanates produced through mass-balance processes, ensuring the renewable origin of the raw materials.

Sustainable Adhesives

The knowledge gained allows us to strengthen our capacity in the production of sustainable adhesives and lay the foundation for new solutions aligned with efficiency, innovation, and the circular economy in the packaging sector,” concludes Natalia Ortuño, Head of Formulation Projects for New Materials and Extrusion and Compounding Technologies at ITENE.

Moreover, in the case of packaging adhesives, compatibility with recycling has been prioritized, following the guidelines of the Recyclass Recyclability Guide. In particular, the use of raw materials that enable the production of aliphatic polyurethanes has been prioritized, since, according to the guide, the presence of up to 3% by weight of this type of adhesive allows packaging structures to be compatible with current recycling systems.

Specifically, ITENE has developed and validated four types of adhesives tailored to the needs of the packaging sector. The solvent-based adhesives were optimized with lower-impact solvents, achieving bonding strengths comparable to those of traditional commercial adhesives.
