IGNITE-LDR is the new European initiative officially launched to support small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in the less-developed regions of Europe in adopting advanced technologies, boosting their competitiveness and integrating them into stronger interregional value chains.
Funded under the European Union’s Instrument for Interregional Innovation Investments (I3), the project brings together 23 partners from 14 countries, blending industry, research organizations, ecosystem hubs, and innovation platforms to tackle one of Europe’s main industrial challenges: closing the gap between the creation of innovation and its actual industrial adoption.
Through IGNITE-LDR, manufacturing SMEs will be able to access, test, and deploy advanced manufacturing and circular economy solutions in real production environments. By reducing cost, complexity, and risks traditionally associated with digital transformation, the project aims to offer manufacturers a clearer path from experimentation to implementation.
From Innovation to Industrial Adoption
Although Europe remains a global leader in industrial innovation, many SMEs, especially in less-developed regions, still face significant barriers to adopting new technologies. A core feature of the project is its “test before you invest” approach (“test before you invest”).
Through pilot demonstrators, testbeds, regional hubs, and cross-border collaboration, SMEs will be able to validate technologies under real industrial conditions and make better-informed investment decisions. The project will also help scale promising solutions from mid- and high levels of technology maturity to real-market deployment.
“IGNITE-LDR aims to make industrial innovation more accessible, more practical and more capable of attracting investment for manufacturers operating in less-developed regions,” says Catarina Reis, the IGNITE-LDR project coordinator. “By connecting technology providers, industrial partners and regional ecosystems, we want to ensure that innovation does not remain limited to pilots or research environments, but translates into measurable impact on production, competitiveness and long-term resilience.”
Six Pilot Demonstrators, One Interregional Ecosystem
A core element of IGNITE-LDR is the deployment of six large-scale pilot demonstrators across Europe. Collectively, these pilots will illustrate how advanced manufacturing and circularity solutions can be applied in different industrial settings, including sustainable materials, consumer and industrial goods, and bio-based products.
These demonstrators will generate evidence-based learnings on operational impact, investment requirements and scalability, giving SMEs practical examples of how new technologies can add value in real production contexts.
“From a manufacturer’s perspective, the true value of IGNITE-LDR lies in being able to apply advanced solutions and access expert knowledge previously inaccessible to their regional ecosystem, in their real production environment, before committing to a large-scale investment,” says Panos Bouklis (European Dynamics SA), the project’s technical coordinator. “This supports knowledge transfer from more developed regions to less developed ones, reduces uncertainty and risk, shortens the learning curve and gives companies a much clearer view of what works, what needs to be adapted and where the strongest business case lies.
Building Interregional Ecosystems for Lasting Impact
Beyond the pilot phase, IGNITE-LDR is designed to build a durable interregional collaboration ecosystem. The project connects manufacturers with technology providers, research organizations, digital innovation hubs, regional clusters and validation environments, creating a stronger ecosystem for industrial adoption.
It also leverages established European platforms such as AGORA, RAMP and F6S to support matchmaking, knowledge exchange and access to collaboration with innovators and funding opportunities. This ecosystem-driven model aims not only to demonstrate technologies but also to accelerate their replication, adoption and subsequent investment across regions.
Within the consortium, IMPACT Accelerator at ISDI leads visibility and impact activities, coordinating communications and dissemination efforts and supporting the development of training and upskilling resources that will help extend the project’s results to a wider manufacturing sector audience. This training and capacity-building dimension is a key part of IGNITE-LDR’s ambition to generate lasting impact beyond the life of the project.
In parallel, the project will support the development of business and investment plans for both pilot end-users and technology providers, helping participating companies and stakeholders define how successful solutions can move beyond validation and become long-term deployments. IGNITE-LDR will also launch open calls to involve more manufacturing SMEs from less-developed regions, technology providers and innovators from across Europe, with details to be announced later.
By combining technology validation, ecosystem building, capacity development and investment readiness, IGNITE-LDR aims to accelerate the digital and green transition of manufacturing SMEs, reduce regional disparities in innovation capability and strengthen Europe’s industrial resilience.
