80% of Spanish Businesses Demand Instant Payments

April 8, 2026

More and more businesses are considering that having an agile, convenient, and secure payment system is a strategic element in improving the consumer experience. In this regard, 83% of Spanish retailers consider it ‘important’ or ‘very important’ that transactions are completed in two seconds.

This is according to Dojo’s “Snapshot of the State of Payments in Spanish Retail”, which analyzed how national companies perceive their payment systems, looking at both technological features, the design of these solutions, and other service aspects offered by providers. The conclusion is clear: speed and immediacy in processes are among the most demanded benefits.

Payment is one of the most critical processes in the operation of any business. It is the final step of the customer journey and a key loyalty opportunity. That’s why, in recent times, we’ve seen rising demand for agile and reliable solutions that make payments an ‘invisible’, seamless, and frictionless process,” says Jesús Molina, Head of Partners and Resellers of Dojo in Spain.

Technological stability also emerges as a key element. Close to nine out of ten businesses positively value that the payment terminals have reliable 4G or Wi‑Fi connectivity, as well as an app that lets them review all transactions in real time.

Regarding service, the most valued aspect is the provider’s 24/7 customer support availability: for 1 in 2 respondents it is a ‘very important’ issue, while 38% consider it ‘important’.

On the flip side, one in four retailers view tipping screens negatively, and one in five prefers not to have audio alerts when a card is declined. “Overall, businesses opt to avoid any functionality that would irritate the user during checkout,” comments Jesús Molina.

Complying with VeriFactu regulations, another concern

With VeriFactu’s rollout planned to begin on January 1, 2027, which will require digital invoicing for all Spanish merchants, 88% of businesses consider it ‘very important’ or ‘important’ that the payment system provide clarity on the status of invoicing and charges.

Likewise, two other features are rated very favorably: the speed at which payments are settled, with transfers arriving at the start of the next business day, and the ability to group all transactions into a single transfer; both are considered ‘very important’ or ‘important’ by 82% of respondents.
