70% of Leaders Feel Their Decisions Are Analyzed More Closely

April 8, 2026

A survey conducted after the publication of Robert Walters’ report “Global Talent Trends 2026” reveals that 70% of leaders feel their decisions are scrutinized more closely than two years ago. This aligns with professionals (78%) who say they are paying more attention to the decisions made by their company’s leadership team.

When asked which types of leadership decisions are judged most, professionals point primarily to people-related decisions (45%), such as hiring, firing, or promotions, where the fairness and transparency of the criteria are questioned. They also highlight burnout-related decisions (29%), such as implementing flexible-work policies.

Gerrit Bouckaert, Global CEO of Robert Walters Recruitment, comments: “Professionals are paying more attention to leadership decisions because the consequences are greater. As technology accelerates change and roles evolve more quickly, people seek assurances that decisions are made thoughtfully and fairly. It’s no longer enough for leaders to make the right calls; team members want to know how those results are reached.

Greater Pressure as Decisions Are More Closely Scrutinized

This higher level of scrutiny has led 40% of team leaders to feel more pressured and stressed in their roles, while 30% have adjusted how they communicate and justify their decisions to meet transparency expectations.

“Greater scrutiny does not mean that leaders are underperforming. It truly reflects how visible and consequential leadership decisions have become. Leaders now face the challenge of making decisions in more complex environments, often with incomplete information and higher expectations of transparency,” says Bouckaert.

And he adds: “For some, this pressure is beginning to make leadership roles less attractive. If organizations want to have strong leaders in the future, they must acknowledge this shift and actively support these roles to maintain trust and performance.

Talent Trends Shaping Leadership Decisions in 2026

The report “Global Talent Trends 2026” identifies seven workforce trends that are increasing the complexity and visibility of leadership decision-making:

  1. Widespread burnout. Subtle signs of burnout among employees are influencing overall team performance, forcing leaders to make more mindful decisions about workload and wellbeing.
  2. Executive leadership succession. With retirements and departures of top executives, organizations must make proactive and deliberate decisions about succession planning.
  3. AI-driven applicant overload. Companies are redesigning their hiring processes in response to the surge of applications they receive for each job opening due to candidates’ use of AI.
  4. Emotional intelligence as an essential leadership capability. As AI and automation advance, leaders are evaluated not only on outcomes but also on how they manage changes and sensitive people-related decisions.
  5. Salary transparency. Pay transparency is redefining compensation expectations, so leaders already feel the pressure to explore new pay structures and how to communicate them.
  6. The normalization of ‘career cushioning’. More professionals are proactively preparing for future career options, creating retention risks but also new opportunities for leaders.
  7. Managing a multigenerational workforce. With up to five generations working together, leaders face challenges tailoring work experiences, communication styles, and work preferences.

“Across all the trends we’re watching in 2026—from the impact of AI on hiring to the importance of emotional intelligence—the credibility of leadership is becoming a decisive factor. Organizations that equip their leaders with the tools to make balanced, people-centered decisions will be better positioned to attract and retain their talent’s engagement,” Bouckaert concludes.
