Tech center Vicomtech inaugurated, a few days ago, its new headquarters in the Eskuzaitzeta (Zubieta) industrial park in Donostia-San Sebastián, fully integrating into the strategic ecosystem of the MUBIL Hub. The opening provides Vicomtech Foundation with a state-of-the-art infrastructure, a necessity stemming from the growth seen in recent years in its lines of work tied to applied mobility and security research.
From these facilities, Vicomtech will drive projects related to connected and automated vehicles (CAV), artificial vision technologies applied to security, real-time video analysis, and solutions for protecting citizens and critical infrastructure.
The research activity that will be developed at Eskuzaitzeta has as one of its main objectives to accelerate the transition toward a safer, more accessible, and more sustainable transportation model. In this context, the center will work to deliver effective responses to the challenge of achieving scenarios of zero emissions, zero accidents, and maximum safety.
To this end, the new headquarters houses a large research laboratory, equipped to meet the demands of advanced applied research and technological development.
Shared investment
The launch of this new center has been made possible thanks to joint funding from the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council and the Vicomtech Foundation, reinforcing Euskadi’s commitment to position itself among international leaders in innovation and advanced technologies.
The inauguration brought together a broad institutional representation and the business innovation ecosystem. Attending the event were Eider Mendoza, Gipuzkoa’s regional president, and Mikel Jáuregi, the Euskadi government’s Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability. Also present were the Vicomtech president, Jon Ander de las Fuentes; the CEO, Julián Flórez, as well as institutional representatives and members of the tech center’s leadership team.
The event also counted on Vicomtech employees who will carry out their activity at the new headquarters, as well as various representatives from the technology and business ecosystem.
The inauguration also served to highlight the entity’s 25th anniversary, a milestone that was very much in evidence during the ceremony and used to recognize the center’s trajectory since its creation. In this context, tribute was paid to the founding members and to the various presidents who have contributed to its development over these 25 years. The event also featured representatives from some of the sector’s and region’s leading companies who joined the celebration of the anniversary.
The incorporation of the Vicomtech Foundation into the MUBIL Hub, alongside other reference players such as CIDETEC, Tecnalia or CEIT, will strengthen the center’s synergies with the innovation ecosystem.
The Gipuzkoa regional president, Eider Mendoza, remarked that “step by step, project by project, the MUBIL Polo is becoming a reference space for generating advanced knowledge, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship in the field of sustainable and intelligent mobility,” and she also thanked Vicomtech’s commitment to “contributing decisively” to this strengthening by adding its capabilities and the experience accumulated over the past 25 years. “The priority is clear,” she added, calling on them to “seize the opportunities generated by the transformation of new mobility to develop a new industry and job opportunities,” while also supporting today’s companies to face the transformation “with guarantees.”
