The Hidden Work Behind the Major Events Market

July 3, 2026

Spain has established itself as one of Europe’s major hubs for events. The Pope’s recent visit, which drew hundreds of thousands of people, has once again highlighted the organizational prowess of a sector that usually works behind the scenes of some of the country’s most significant events.

In the coming months, Spain will again serve as the stage for international festivals, top-tier sporting competitions, concert tours, congresses, corporate gatherings, and large-scale brand experiences that will attract millions of attendees and generate a substantial economic, tourism, and business impact.

According to the May 2025 MICE Forum Report, the events industry moves more than €20 billion annually and accounts for about 1.2% of the national GDP, generating employment and activity in fields as diverse as tourism, hospitality, transportation, technology, audiovisual production, security, communications, and commerce. Spain’s leadership as a destination for major events rests on an outstanding cultural, gastronomic, and leisure offering, first-rate infrastructure and connectivity, a wide variety of destinations, and a highly professionalized industry.

Beyond the numbers, experts note that the real value of this industry lies in its ability to project Spain’s image as a country highly prepared to manage complex events with high standards of quality, safety, innovation, and attendee experience. Added to this is a hallmark closely tied to the Spanish character: a unique creative flair, rooted in the traditional Spanish picaresque ethos—ingenuity and adaptability—that allows for agile responses to the challenges posed by any major event.

«The Pope’s recent visit has once again demonstrated Spain’s organizational capability. On the main day alone, around 17,000 professionals linked directly or indirectly to the events industry were involved, a figure that helps illustrate the complex human and technical framework behind these happenings. Spain has the talent, experience, and capability to organize some of the world’s most complex events, thanks to the coordinated work of hundreds of professionals who spend months planning every detail.», explains Mariano Rodríguez, president of AEVEA.

What You Don’t See: The Keys That Make a Great Event Possible

For industry professionals, the success of a major event is often measured precisely by what attendees do not perceive. When everything runs smoothly, it goes unnoticed. Yet behind every great event lies a complex machinery that requires months of planning:

  • Access control and capacity management.
  • Security and emergency plans.
  • Mobility and transportation for attendees.
  • Coordination with public authorities and security services.
  • Technical and audiovisual production.
  • Infrastructure and setup.
  • Technology and connectivity.
  • Medical services.
  • Sustainability and waste management.
  • Attendee experience.
  • Contingency plans for incidents or unforeseen events.

«The difference between a decent event and an excellent one often lies in everything attendees do not notice. When security, access, logistics, or coordination operate smoothly, it’s because thorough planning and months of work behind the scenes are at play,» says Rodríguez.
