SumUp Enters Loyalty Programs for Small Businesses

SumUp Loyalty is a new solution designed to put loyalty tools, once reserved for large chains, within reach of small businesses and to reward consumers with digital incentives, turning card payments into accumulated points. Available in Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, and Italy, the program requires no new hardware installation and works with the SumUp solutions that merchants already use.

In Spain, loyalty programs are becoming a key tool to attract and retain customers: 90% of consumers value being recognized as a regular customer. Moreover, according to the Global Customer Loyalty Report, 29% say they spend more on brands with loyalty programs and 42% say they feel more loyal to them. From the business side, the sentiment is equally clear: 89% of European companies believe that their loyalty programs deliver value they wouldn’t obtain through other means, confirming their direct impact on profitability and long-term customer relationships.

As competition grows in local commerce, loyalty becomes a core driver of business growth. However, many available solutions remain costly, complex, or are designed for large retailers.

How it works

Customers who shop at a business with SumUp can download the company’s new app, SumUp Local, and link their card just once. From that moment, every purchase at participating merchants automatically earns rewards, with no extra steps required at checkout.

SumUp Loyalty is built around this app, which lets users discover nearby shops, view available promotions and rewards, and pay with ease. The solution aims to support small local businesses while giving customers tangible benefits in their everyday shopping.

Meanwhile, merchants can create digital loyalty programs—stamps or points—in just a few minutes from their SumUp dashboard. In addition, SumUp Loyalty provides tools for merchants to stay in touch with customers after a visit. Push notifications and personalized promotions help keep the business visible, while the Autopilot feature identifies inactive customers and sends them offers to reactivate them, turning one-off visits into habitual shopping.

The rollout in Spain follows a successful testing phase in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where thousands of merchants already use the program.

SumUp POS: a complete checkout system

The earlier solutions integrate with SumUp POS, an all-in-one checkout system designed for retail, bars, hospitality, and restaurants, featuring dual screens. The merchant uses a 13.3-inch touchscreen to manage sales and daily activity, while the customer sees an 8-inch display showing products, prices, and loyalty information during checkout.

This design enables interaction with the loyalty program at the moment of purchase, so the customer can view their order, track its progress, and pay in a single seamless experience. SumUp POS includes pre-installed management software with no additional costs or hardware rental requirements; the core checkout and loyalty features are included in the price. Businesses that opt for the TPV Plus subscription gain advanced features, such as order synchronization across multiple devices, ideal for teams taking orders and processing payments on the move.
