Public Sector IT Job Openings Up 42%

May 26, 2026

The digital transformation of the Public Administration has become one of the state’s major structural challenges. The Public Employment Offer (OEP) for 2026 confirms this trend with a historic boost: the government announced it would recruit 1,700 positions in ICT corps, a 42% increase over the previous year. This surge coincides with a boom of applicants: data from Supera Oposiciones shows interest in applying to the Technicians’ Auxiliary of Informatics (TAI) corps has grown by 38% in the last year.

Positions and Strategies

Likewise, the OEP 2026 includes 27,232 positions for the General State Administration, including 346 extraordinary positions tied to climate emergencies, and it is structured around three major axes: digital transformation, improvement of essential services, and strengthening strategic areas.

For Javier G., a civil servant in the Management of Systems and Informatics Corps of the State Administration and a contributor to Supera Oposiciones, this increase is not driven by a punctual need, but by a profound shift in how the Administration operates: “The reinforcement of technological profiles in the General State Administration is not a one-off phenomenon of the OEP 2026, but the culmination of a transformation process that has accelerated for nearly a decade.”

According to the expert, the turning point occurred with the consolidation of electronic administration between 2017 and 2018, when digital processing began to become the main channel of interaction between citizens and the Administration. From that moment, technology stopped being a support tool and became an essential part of the ordinary functioning of the public sector.

The pandemic accelerated this process even further. The need to maintain essential services, implement mass remote work, and ensure non-face-to-face care demonstrated that the resilience of the public system depended directly on its technological maturity. “Technology is no longer just a support, it is a critical infrastructure of the State”, says Javier G.

AI, Cybersecurity, and Data: The New Strategic Profiles of Public Employment

Into this scenario comes the impact of the European Next Generation EU funds, which have propelled modernization projects of systems, migration to cloud environments, data platforms, and the progressive integration of artificial intelligence into administrative processes. However, this progress also requires strengthening the Administration’s internal capacity to design, supervise, and govern these systems.

In this context, corps such as Management of Systems and Informatics (GSI), responsible for the design, development, operation, and maintenance of Spain’s public information systems, take on a strategic role. It’s not just about technical profiles, but professionals who act as a bridge between institutional strategy, technological execution, and collaboration with external companies.

Corps like GSI play a structural role in the digital transformation of the General State Administration. They are not merely operational profiles, but key pieces to ensure that digitalization, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity translate into real and sustainable systems within the public sector,” says the professor from Supera Oposiciones.

Finally, the OEP 2026 confirms this trend by incorporating specific training in digital transformation into selective courses, demonstrating that digitalization is now a cross-cutting axis across all public employment.
