IONOS has announced the integration of Euro-Office into its office suite, Nextcloud Workspace. This open‑source solution for editing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations was created thanks to an initiative involving several European technology companies, led by IONOS in collaboration with Nextcloud. Euro-Office is an adaptive tool that reliably handles Microsoft file formats and preserves its long‑term independence thanks to its open‑source license.
A Fully Sovereign Workspace
IONOS Nextcloud Workspace is a comprehensive, GDPR‑compliant work environment designed for businesses and public administrations. It includes file storage, collaborative document editing, email, calendar, chat, and video conferencing, and operates exclusively on a European infrastructure subject to German law. The AI assistant, based on the IONOS AI Model Hub, can also be used in a way that fully respects data sovereignty.
Euro-Office is released under the AGPLv3 license. This means its source code is publicly available for review, with no usage restrictions imposed by trademark rights. Unlike proprietary software, you can see how the application works and who is responsible for its ongoing development. This auditability is becoming an increasingly important hiring criterion for public administrations and regulated industries.
“With the integration of Euro-Office into Nextcloud Workspace, we are offering European companies a real, modern, and sovereign alternative for the daily management of their documents, ensuring they maintain full control of their data and strengthen their digital sovereignty from the server to the workstation,” says Guillermo Arana, IONOS CLOUD Manager in Spain.
For users, the architecture of this new suite can make a fundamental difference. Euro-Office renders documents directly in the browser, instead of processing them on a server and transmitting them as images. As a result, changes appear instantly, even when several people are working on the same file simultaneously.
In addition, Euro-Office offers native compatibility with the DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX file formats. The formats, macros, and complex layouts are preserved when opening and saving files, making it easier to move away from Microsoft environments.
Euro-Office is an initiative driven by IONOS and Nextcloud with the support of Proton, XWiki, OpenProject, and other partners. Participating companies fund the project themselves, without government subsidies. This provides a solid foundation for the long‑term development of the suite. To support this work, IONOS has established engineering teams in Berlin and Logroño.
