How Gold’s Old Guard Is Adapting to Digital Investors

May 7, 2026

The precious metals sector, traditionally associated with established processes and intermediaries, is undergoing a gradual transformation. This shift is driven by the emergence of a new generation of investors who demand transparency, instant access, and real ownership, pushing the industry to evolve beyond its traditional models.

Several established players in the precious metals sector are beginning to integrate digital models into their offerings. For example, groups like MKS PAMP have developed platforms designed to facilitate retail investors’ access to physical metals.

The New Investor’s Demands

This initiative is not a mere modernization, but a strategic response to three key demands of the new investor:

  • Disintermediation: The current investor distrusts the multiple layers of intermediaries and seeks a direct connection with the asset. Digital platforms enable the purchase of physical gold, which is direct and legal ownership by the client, offering a more direct exposure to physical assets as an alternative to financial instruments.
  • Radical transparency: In a sector where costs and fees are often complex, the digital model seeks greater transparency regarding prices, storage fees, and execution terms. This approach makes terms explicit and accessible, reflecting the user experience of leading fintech companies.
  • Verifiable security: Digitization is not at odds with physical security; in fact, it can enhance it by providing greater visibility into storage, ownership structures, and insurance arrangements. This allows the investor to verify that their assets are held in a professional vault — often in a jurisdiction such as Switzerland and outside the banking system — and that they are insured in their name.

According to Nicolas Cracco, CEO of GOLD AVENUE, the emergence of digital platforms within established groups reflects a broader shift in the industry. He suggests that the future growth of physical asset investment could increasingly depend on the combination of institutional trust and digital accessibility.
