Hospitality Industry Loses Nearly Two-Thirds of Its Employees Every Year: How to Curb Turnover

June 23, 2026

Skello has unveiled new functionalities in artificial intelligence, recruitment, and document automation. In doing so, the company aims to help businesses reduce staff turnover and streamline the daily management of their teams in areas like hospitality, where the annual turnover rate already reaches 63.8%, the highest figure in Spain’s economy.

The evolution responds to a reality shared by sectors such as hospitality, retail, and commerce: operational teams continue to face challenges in hiring, turnover, and organization without tools tailored to their tempo and the complexity of the sector. While large corporations have accelerated digitalization in their HR departments, many businesses with shift-based employees still manage processes manually or in fragmented ways.

Until now, Skello mainly addressed the needs of operational teams in hiring, scheduling, and payroll distribution. Going forward, the platform will also incorporate recruitment and onboarding processes, as well as intelligent and advanced document management. The goal is for companies to manage from a single environment everything related to onboarding new employees, from candidate search to contract signing and document management.

Skello Assistant, a real extension of the team

The update also marks a new step in the evolution of Skello Assistant, the built-in assistant on the platform. The tool shifts from offering advisory responses to acting more proactively, detecting anomalies and alerting on issues related to workforce management: excessive overtime, contracts awaiting signature, or hires outside the normal operating hours of each business.

Additionally, the company introduces new automation capabilities for administrative and HR tasks, such as document generation, electronic signing, or payroll distribution. The idea, the company explains, is to use artificial intelligence to save time and facilitate decision-making, without replacing the role of managers and team leaders.

Team management has become much more complex in recent years. It’s no longer just about organizing schedules, but also about adapting quickly, onboarding staff with agility, and preventing small issues from impacting the daily operation of the business,” explains Marc Pagès, General Manager of Skello in Spain. “We believe technology can help precisely in that: simplifying administrative tasks and giving more visibility to team managers so they can anticipate and make better decisions.”

The HR technology hasn’t advanced equally for all workers

Sectors such as hospitality, retail or commerce face constant challenges in hiring, planning, and turnover, but many operational teams still manage these processes with fragmented or poorly adapted tools to their daily reality. In response, Skello aims to bring the same level of innovation and automation that large corporations already apply in their HR departments to these businesses.

In industries like hospitality, people management remains one of the main business challenges. According to Linkers data (April 2026), annual turnover already reaches 63.8%, the highest figure in Spain’s economy.

Adding to this is the economic impact of replacing kitchen or dining staff. CaixaBank Research notes that replacing a single employee can cost between €2,800 and €5,000. And there is another figure that particularly worries the sector: 38% of European youth who start working in hospitality leave this activity before reaching two years, according to Randstad Research.

The company has also strengthened its intelligent scheduling system. The tool learns from the habits and needs of each business to help create schedules, anticipate staffing needs, and adapt more quickly to day-to-day contingencies.

We want to build a solution that truly answers what businesses here in Spain need, especially the operational teams that support demanding sectors like hospitality or retail,” adds Marc. “Technology makes sense when it helps you work better and makes your day-to-day life a little easier.”
