Fam O’Clock: Open Hardware to Beat Insomnia

The prolonged use of smartphones in bed, the phenomenon known as vamping, has solidified as a quiet epidemic among Generation Z. According to data from the Spanish Neurology Society (SEN), overexposure to blue light from screens before sleep delays melatonin secretion, causing more than 30% of Spanish youths and teenagers to suffer from insomnia, which in turn fuels stress and isolation.

To tackle this reality with positive-impact technology, content creator and robotics expert Tomás Castellanos, known for engineering projects for PlayStation or El Hormiguero, has developed the Fam O’Clock: a retro-styled smart desk clock built from scratch with 3D printing and open hardware.

The project has been championed by Canvas, Greystar’s student housing brand, as the centerpiece of its mental health program. The goal is to allow residents to keep their smartphones out of the bedroom and structure their daily routine in an analog way, waking up to audio messages from family members or pets to reduce feelings of isolation and improve sleep hygiene.

Maker Engineering: NES-inspired Miniaturization and Aesthetics

Far from being a simple customization of a commercial gadget, the Fam O’Clock is a comprehensive hardware-and-software development completed in a record time of just one month.

Physically, the device houses a Raspberry Pi Zero connected to a 5-inch LED touch display (800 × 480 px). The technical ecosystem guarantees full autonomy thanks to a battery with its own voltage regulator and an RTC DS3231 module, which maintains the hardware clock’s precision even if external power is lost. All of it is housed in a striking orange enclosure produced via 3D printing (PLA filament), its industrial design paying homage to the 1980s and classic 8-bit consoles.

Fluid Software and the Mechanics of the ‘Super Alarm’

One of Castellanos’ biggest technical challenges has been performance. The entire graphical interface, which simulates the tactile response of modern smartphones using large icons and smooth animations, has been programmed entirely in Python. To squeeze maximum performance from the Pi Zero hardware, the code runs on a highly stripped-down Linux environment (bare-metal philosophy).

The best-kept secret of the Fam O’Clock lies inside its mechanical core. The hardware integrates a physical linear actuator, responsible for powering the “Super Alarm” function. When activated, this component deploys a hidden, side-mounted speaker designed specifically to ensure waking users from their deepest sleep.

Currently, the Fam O’Clock is launched as an exclusive solution for residents of Canvas centers in Barcelona, Pamplona, Salamanca, Seville and Valencia. However, the company does not rule out marketing it to the general public if market interest exceeds expectations.
