Factorial has acquired Empion, an AI-powered talent assessment platform based in Berlin. The acquisition marks a new milestone in Factorial’s expansion into Germany, opening up candidate and employee assessments, a new capability that will benefit customers across the company’s platform.
The purchase represents a decisive step in Factorial’s German strategy, expanding the product offering while strengthening the company’s presence and credibility in the local market. The deal will add several million dollars in annual recurring revenue (ARR) to the business, underscoring the financial heft of the agreement in addition to its strategic value.
This move addresses a gap in the HR software market: AI-powered talent assessment features—including selection, performance, and engagement—are typically offered through third-party integrations rather than native, built-in capabilities. By incorporating Empion, Factorial makes candidate and employee assessments a central, AI-driven function unified on its platform, eliminating the need for extra tools. The offering will combine the cultural-fit assessments already present in Empion with new psychometric, motivational, cognitive, and skills tests.
“Germany is the most important workplace technology market in Europe, and we want to give companies the most complete product possible, backed by a team that already has the trust of German firms like Deutsche Telekom, Procter & Gamble, Siemens Mobility, Raiffeisenbanken, and HUK-COBURG. Empion delivers exactly that, in addition to deep AI-powered talent assessment expertise. It strengthens our platform for all customers, not just Germany’s. It’s also a clear sign of our ambition to become a European AI leader,” said Jordi Romero, CEO of Factorial.
About the acquisition
Empion, founded in 2021, currently works with German companies of all sizes, from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations, applying AI to assess talent across factors such as cultural fit, skills, and motivation, rather than relying solely on keywords-filtered résumés.
Dr. Annika von Mutius, CEO of Empion and a board member of KI-Bundesverband, the largest AI association in Germany, is a leading voice in the national AI debate. A mathematics PhD, she previously worked on AI-powered robotics systems in San Francisco before returning to Europe to found Empion.
“We founded Empion on the conviction that talent selection should be based on the person’s fit to the role, not on keywords. We chose to join Factorial for its scale and reach in Germany and Europe, which will enable us to bring this approach to many more companies without compromising the research and methodology that support it. Candidate and employee assessments are only the first step of what this will mean for Factorial’s customers,” said Dr. Annika von Mutius, founder and CEO of Empion.
What this means for customers
Empion’s current customers will notice no changes to their product experience, service availability, or their existing contracts as a result of the acquisition. They will continue to have access to the same products and the support they rely on today.
Over time, Empion’s technology and team will be fully integrated into Factorial’s candidate and employee assessments. This will enable customers to manage the entire talent lifecycle, from hiring to performance and engagement, in a more connected way from a single platform.
Dr. Annika von Mutius will join Factorial’s leadership team in Germany. Alongside the rest of Empion’s team, she will lead the development of candidate and employee assessments as Empion’s technology and personnel integrate into Factorial’s platform.
