The economic uncertainty, rising travel costs, and recent tensions over Europe’s energy supply are driving travel that is more flexible, nearby, and easy to organize. In this context, domestic outdoor tourism gains prominence among Spanish travelers, according to the latest data from Pitchup.com.
Bookings by Spanish users for destinations within Spain have increased by 96% so far this year, compared with the same period in 2025, reflecting a growing interest in domestic getaways and options less dependent on flying.
In line with this trend, and as a global pattern, Pitchup.com has recorded this year a 164% increase in the use of the filter “pickup by public transport”, a sign of growing interest in accommodations that are easily accessible without needing to fly or rely exclusively on the car.
At the same time, travelers are planning more flexibly and spontaneously. Forty percent of bookings made in Spain through Pitchup.com are completed in the week before travel, while last-minute bookings—made on the same day or the day before departure—have increased by 13% versus last year.
Fewer Days Away
The average length of stays has also declined slightly. Year to date, the average stay in Spain sits at 3.1 nights, about 4% less than in 2025, pointing to tighter finances and a search for shorter getaways that are easier to fit into a budget.
Meanwhile, mobile has solidified its status as the preferred channel for on-the-go decision-making, accounting for 66% of bookings made in Spain through the platform.
“Although it is still early to know whether the current energy-supply tensions could have a direct impact on travel within Europe, there are already signs that many travelers are adjusting how they plan. In Spain, the growth of domestic bookings, the share of last-minute escapes, and the interest in affordable options via public transport point to a search for travel that is more flexible and adaptable,” explains Dan Yates, founder of Pitchup.com.
