As every year, unfortunately in Spain we relive the summer nightmare: forest fires, which spread with rising temperatures, drought, and the effects of climate change. In this context, AECORK (Association of Cork Industry Entrepreneurs of Catalonia) and ICSuro (Catalan Cork Institute) spotlight a prevention tool that often goes unnoticed: the active management of cork oak forests.
Spain hosts more than 500,000 hectares of cork oaks, roughly a quarter of the world’s cork ecosystem, while Spain and Portugal account for more than 60% of the planet’s cork oaks and more than 70% of cork production. Beyond its environmental importance, these forests are among the main natural barriers against desertification, biodiversity loss, and forest fires.
A Forest That Generates Value and Protects the Territory
The cork oak forests maintain a sustainable economic activity tied to cork harvesting, a practice that is carried out without felling the tree and that helps promote active forest management and long-term conservation.
According to data from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the cork oak value chain generates around 1.5 billion euros annually in Mediterranean-producing countries, becoming one of the major sources of economic activity and employment in numerous rural areas.
This activity fosters forest maintenance, access, and monitoring that help reduce the buildup of vegetal fuel and, therefore, lower vulnerability to high-intensity wildfires.
The Tree That Resists Fire
The cork oak possesses a unique feature among Mediterranean forest species: its cork bark acts as a natural insulator against high temperatures.
This protection allows many specimens to survive even after severe fires, preserving their capacity to regenerate and recover. Various forest studies have identified cork oaks as one of the Mediterranean ecosystems with the greatest resilience to fire.
Biodiversity, Climate, and Prevention: A Common Goal
Cork oaks are considered among the ecosystems with the highest biodiversity in the European Union. They host thousands of species of flora and fauna and constitute habitats for emblematic species such as the Iberian lynx, the Iberian Imperial Eagle, and numerous bird, pollinator, and mammal species.
In addition, they play a fundamental role in carbon capture, soil conservation, and water regulation, functions especially relevant under growing climate pressure.
However, experts and environmental organizations agree that the future viability of these ecosystems largely depends on them remaining economically sustainable for the communities that manage them.
Every Cork Stopper Helps Keep a Forest Alive
Cork harvesting is a completely renewable activity that can be carried out for more than a century of the tree’s productive life without the need to fell the tree. This sustainable harvesting model makes cork much more than a product associated with wine.
At a moment when wildfires are one of the greatest environmental challenges for Southern Europe, cork oaks prove that conservation and economic activity can go hand in hand, offering an example of how sustainable land management can become a key tool to protect the forests of the future.
