BitMAYDAY is a digital alert tool for assault or risk that instantly notifies coworkers when danger is detected. Several healthcare centers in Barcelona and the surrounding metropolitan area, as well as the Andorran Health Service (SAAS) of Andorra, are already implementing it, giving coverage to 3,000 job positions. The developers aim to broaden the solution’s usefulness to other sectors, such as education or retail, and to large corporations.
Workplace aggression represents a rising risk, especially in the healthcare field. According to the Observatory Against Aggressions of the Medical College Organization (OMC), in 2024 there were 847 violent actions reported to medical boards, i.e., one every 10 hours, marking a new annual record. The report notes that, of the total aggressions suffered, 62.4% involve women, a figure that reinforces the trend in recent years, in which women bear the majority of such incidents.
Developed by a Catalan startup
Developed by a Vic (Barcelona) based company of the same name, BitMAYDAY operates as a button that, with a single click, allows the worker to immediately alert coworkers and security personnel in case of danger.
Unlike other less developed solutions, this includes a desktop app and a mobile app, managed through a web portal that provides centralized management of the devices. The tool lets you create “alert subgroups” and modify “safety zones” from a single point in real time, with the aim of adjusting the segments of the work groups and ensuring that no one falls outside coverage.
It also offers data and statistics to help executive teams identify vulnerable locations and situations, types of incidents, peak risk hours, etc., and to undertake preventive actions to reinforce space security. In addition to these features, BitMAYDAY also allows automatically sending a questionnaire to the affected person, to gather information about the incident, among other options.
In 2017, faced with the rise of aggressions and incidents in the healthcare field, a group of Catalan hospitals and medical centers already implemented a reduced version of BitMAYDAY when they identified the need to reinforce security and the protection of their workers.
In the words of Jordi Parareda, founder of BitMAYDAY: “Unfortunately, workplace aggression has not stopped growing. Moreover, within a company there can be many types of alerts beyond aggressions, such as fires, medical alerts, intrusions, etc. The solution helps companies assess their security levels and the perception that workers have of it, and it is prepared to be deployed in any type of company, large or small, and in any sector.”
