American Express has added 250,000 new Spanish merchants to its network in 2025. The inclusion of Alcampo is a clear example of this progress, extending acceptance to one of Spain’s most important everyday shopping environments.
“Acceptance has become a strategic factor for merchants and a key element of the customer experience. As consumers increasingly expect to be able to pay easily wherever they shop, our goal is for American Express to be accepted for both everyday purchases and travel, dining and premium experiences. Incorporations like Alcampo reflect this evolution and allow us to connect merchants with a high-value customer base,” says Julia López, Vice President and General Manager of the Merchant Network for Continental Europe at American Express.
The latest additions expand American Express acceptance across categories such as daily spend, travel, dining and lifestyle. Alcampo reinforces acceptance in groceries and family shopping, while the inclusion of Maisons du Monde expands the network in the home and décor category. Meanwhile, the deployment of Tap & Go across the Madrid Metro network and Indigo broadens payment options in public transport and parking. The inclusion of new travel and dining establishments, including Volotea, Nomade Temple Hotels, Gran Hotel Margalida, Honest Greens, Lamucca and Ramón Freixa Tradición & Atelier, further demonstrates the growing diversity of the network.
Using the Card for Everyday Spending
This growth enables cardholders to use their American Express cards more frequently for everyday expenses, from weekly shopping to travel, dining and lifestyle experiences. It also creates greater value for merchants since, in Spain, American Express cardholders spend five times more per year than holders of other payment cards, make 1.6 times more transactions and spend 3.1 times more per transaction. For merchants, accepting American Express means access to a high-value customer base, with distinctive spending patterns, high purchase frequency and ever-higher expectations for a smooth and reliable payment experience.
With this continued growth, the company is building a broader, more diverse acceptance network that increasingly aligns with consumer spending habits. The network enables cardholders to use their cards in more places and more often, while offering merchants new opportunities to attract high-value customers and reinforcing American Express’s role as a strategic partner for businesses in Spain.
More than 170 million establishments worldwide already accept American Express payments, reflecting the continued growth of a network that connects merchants with high-value customers and offers cardholders greater flexibility to use their cards wherever they are.
