Ribera del Duero Wines Thrive Internationally

April 5, 2026

The Regulatory Council of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin has announced export data for 2025, a year in which the denomination has once again demonstrated the strength of its international positioning in a context that has been especially demanding for global wine trade.

During the past year, Ribera del Duero wine exports registered a slight decline of 1.9% in volume compared with the previous year, a trajectory significantly more favorable than that experienced by the Spanish wine sector as a whole, especially considering that virtually all of our exports consist of red wines.

According to data from the Spanish Tax Authority (AEAT) analyzed by the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organization (OIVE), Spanish wine exports closed 2025 with a 3.4% drop in volume. If we analyze specifically the performance of bottled wines with a denomination of origin, the segment in which Ribera del Duero wines compete, the decline reaches 9.9%, reflecting the greater international robustness of these wines in a challenging year for international trade.

“In a context marked by global instability and trade tensions, the denomination has managed to cushion the impact thanks to its strategic commitment to quality, differentiation, prestige, and the added value of its wines,” says Miguel Sanz, chief executive officer of the Regulatory Council of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin. “We will continue strengthening our outbound promotion strategy to consolidate our presence in key markets and to bring Ribera del Duero wines closer to new consumers around the world,” adds Sanz.

Switzerland, Mexico and the United States, the leading international markets

By market, Switzerland remains the main destination for Ribera del Duero wines, with more than 2 million liters exported in 2025. It is followed by Mexico, which secures its second position with more than 1.6 million liters. And the United States, which ranks third with 1.2 million liters exported last year.

Additionally, several markets have shown positive growth for the denomination. Notable gains were Germany (+30.7%), Puerto Rico (+12.5%), Sweden (+10.8%), Mexico (+5.4%), and the Dominican Republic (+2.7%).

Currently, Ribera del Duero wines are present in more than 100 countries, underscoring the growing degree of internationalization of the denomination. Export has become a strategic priority for the wineries, as evidenced by 245 of the 316 registered wineries engaging in export activity during 2025.

Globally, exports account for 18% of the denomination’s total production, highlighting the significant growth potential in international markets. To this end, the Regulatory Council continues to strengthen its outbound promotion strategy through campaigns in 11 strategic markets: United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, China, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Collectively, these countries account for 72% of Ribera del Duero exports.
