The Alicante-based international company PLD Space, a specialist in advanced space transportation, has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the European Launcher Challenge (ELC), a strategic initiative designed to strengthen Europe’s autonomous, competitive, and space-resilient access. ESA’s selection of PLD Space marks a significant endorsement of the company’s technology roadmap, its execution capability, and the role it will play within Europe’s future launcher ecosystem.

A Project Worth More Than €150 Million
The awarded contract, with a total value of €158.9 million, covers Components A and B of the European Launcher Challenge. Component A will advance the consolidation of the company’s commercial orbital launch service and the gradual increase of its launch cadence through 2030, addressing the growing commercial interest in MIURA 5 in international markets.
Meanwhile, Component B, focused on upgrading orbital capacity (Upgraded Orbital Capacity), will support the development of new capabilities for MIURA 5 aimed at serving institutional and commercial missions that require higher payload capacity and greater orbital reach, as well as incorporating propulsive landing capabilities as a step toward reusability.
The development of enhanced orbital capabilities for MIURA5 is part of PLD Space’s ambitious technology roadmap and constitutes a strategic step toward MIURA Next, the company’s future family of heavy-lift launchers. The principal subsystems and enhancements developed under the Upgraded Orbital Capacity program are being designed to be directly transferable to future generations of launchers, enabling faster development of new launch capabilities, reducing technological risk, and maximizing the return on technology investments.

The selection also reinforces PLD Space’s industrial model, based on vertical integration, the development of robust technologies, and a “test-like-you-fly” validation methodology, which mirrors real flight conditions on the ground. This approach has allowed the company to progress from the MIURA 1 success to the final development phase of MIURA 5, while continuing to execute the ambitious technology roadmap publicly unveiled in 2024.
