Software Replaces Infrastructure as the Competitive Advantage in the Electric Sector

August 24, 2026

The advances in digitalization within the energy system and the adoption of artificial intelligence are shifting the electric sector’s competitive edge, moving the strategic value away from physical infrastructure toward software development, advanced algorithms, and real-time data management.

The European Commission projects electricity consumption to rise by about 60% before 2030, driven primarily by the electrification of transportation, industry, and buildings. To absorb the growing demand and advance toward a system with a greater share of renewables, Brussels is backing more flexible, decentralized, and digitized grids. In this context, smart meters, already present in more than half of European households, have become a source of information to optimize energy use.

Companies like Chippio point to a trend toward software-centric approaches and a digital model focused on intelligent consumption and cost optimization through real-time data analysis and wholesale market forecasting.

From Simple Supply to Smart Consumption

Against the traditional selling model, based on opaque processes and a heavy reliance on phone support, a new generation of electric sector companies is emerging whose main competitive edge lies in software. Thanks to in-house technology development, small teams can autonomously manage the supply and energy optimization for thousands of homes.

Chippio, for example, uses algorithms and artificial intelligence to analyze in real time the evolution of the electricity market, identify consumption patterns, and automate decisions that shift demand toward hours of higher renewable production and lower cost for the consumer. Beyond the economic savings, these models contribute to a more flexible, efficient grid prepared to integrate growing volumes of clean energy.

Automation Driven by Efficiency

Artificial intelligence is also translating the optimization of electricity consumption into systems capable of acting autonomously. Through algorithms that analyze in real time the evolution of the wholesale market, these platforms can schedule flexible consumption, such as charging an electric vehicle, at times when electricity prices are lowest. In Spain, the gap between off-peak and peak-hour prices can reach up to 60% on certain days, enabling a significant reduction in the cost of certain usages.

In that vein, Chippio pioneered the Spanish market by launching integrated smart services like Smart Charging in 2023. This exclusive solution lets electric vehicle users save up to €600 per year by automatically scheduling charging during the hours when energy prices are lowest, and up to 50% off each car charge by knowing real-time market prices. Currently, about 1 in 5 Chippio customers are already using this technology.

The automation of these decisions makes it easier for users to achieve those savings without having to continually follow wholesale price movements. Beyond the economic benefit, this evolution signals a structural shift in the sector; namely, the ability to develop algorithms, integrate smart tools, and manage real-time data is shaping up as one of the main competitive factors for electric retailers in the coming years. In this new scenario, software ceases to be a supporting element and becomes a key, strategic driver of the energy business.

The goal of Chippio is for technology to actively work for people, breaking the asymmetries of a sector historically opaque,” says Pol Brau, Business Manager at Chippio. “The development of digital tools shows that giving consumers full control of their data is not only the fastest path to lead the energy transition, but also the way to ensure it is more sustainable and more profitable.”
