Extreme Heat in the Agri-Food Sector: How Digitalization Is Making a Difference

During June, Spain recorded historic temperature highs. In fact, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) activated red and orange level warnings across much of the peninsula mid-month, with highs around 44°C (111°F) in the Guadalquivir Valley and tropical nights of 25°C (77°F) in large swaths of the interior. As August begins, we’re diving into a new heat wave that puts extreme danger to areas of Aragón, the Valencian Community and Catalonia, with values ranging from 42°C to 44°C (108°F–111°F).

The social debate centers on public health and the risk of wildfires. But there is another front that directly affects us, the distribution of food. When thermometers exceed 40°C (104°F), perishable products such as fruits and vegetables, prepared foods and fresh or frozen goods can be especially exposed to different risks. Among them, a compromised cold chain during transport and storage or deliveries that arrive late as road incidents rise. To this is added an inefficient last mile with poorly optimized routes, waiting times and multiple stops. Obstacles that can lead to higher waste rates and higher operating costs.

According to Orisha Agrifood, in a scenario that is increasingly unpredictable, food distributors must have tools that allow them to understand at any moment what they have, where it is and how long it has been in transit in order to react when weather conditions change abruptly.

When temperatures are very high, the margins for reaction narrow and inventory errors stop being an administrative problem to become a direct loss of product. 3 – End-to-end chain coordination to the last mile

When heat accelerates the ripening of a crop or forces changes in harvest times, the entire supply chain must adjust. Systems that connect the producer, the warehouse and the carrier in real time reduce the margin of error in that coordination. Moreover, during episodes of extreme heat, they enable planning routes more efficiently and reacting quickly to incidents or last-minute changes.

4 – Automatic alerts for parameter deviations

Technology allows configuring alerts when a shipment exceeds the maximum transit time or when the stock of a perishable product falls below a critical threshold. Responding to an alert is cheaper than handling a return or a loss of goods.

5 – Planning based on historical data and weather forecasting

Summers with episodes of extreme heat are no longer an exception; they are a growing constant. Operators who cross their historical distribution data with weather forecasts can anticipate bottlenecks before they occur and avoid improvising when it’s already happening.

The digitization of the food distribution chain is not a debate for the future, it’s an operational necessity that each heat wave makes more urgent. The agri-food companies that already work with integrated management systems have an advantage, the ability to know what they have, where it is and how long it’s been in transit before the problem reaches the point of sale.
