How the Iberian Pig Monitoring System Works During Montanera (Acorn Season)

April 23, 2026

COVAP has integrated into its business a smart monitoring project for pigs of 100% Iberian breed during the montanera 2025-2026. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Innogando, becomes the first system tailored specifically to the Iberian pork sector.

The project arises within GEN, COVAP’s Open Innovation program. Innogando, after standing out as a finalist and becoming a strategic investment bet for the Cooperative, took on the challenge of developing disruptive technology for the dehesa. The result is pioneering devices that, thanks to their compact design and an innovative mounting system, guarantee ergonomic and natural adaptation to the animal in its environment.

After several prior trials, the montanera 2025-2026 included a pilot herd of 16 pigs equipped with these devices. The deployment was carried out successfully, yielding a volume of data of extremely high value for the livestock sector.

To ensure accuracy, the AI algorithms have been validated by the Technological Center for Agro-Food Innovation and Research (CICAP). After an exhaustive period of field observation, a 94% accuracy in interpreting the animal’s behavior and activity has been certified.

Results that Transform Montanera Knowledge

The data obtained reveal unprecedented information about the biological cycle of the acorn-fed Iberian pig over 24 hours (the montanera finishing period on the Dehesa):

  • 14 hours of daily rest (a key period for nutrient assimilation)
  • Eight hours of “belloteo” activity (active grazing and acorn consumption)
  • Two hours of curiosity and exploration of the surroundings (an indicator of welfare and animal intelligence)

These data demonstrate that the animals’ behavior is a perfect adaptation to the environment in which they live, the Dehesa, maximizing the resources it provides to them.

In terms of physical effort, the pilot herd traveled more than 10,000 kilometers in 69 days, with each animal averaging between 8 and 10 kilometers daily. These data not only debunk beliefs about the sedentary nature of these animals, but also show that, thanks to this aerobic exercise the pigs carry out, the fat conversion rate is highly optimal and promotes intramuscular fat infiltration that characterizes the Iberian de bellota and gives the shine and reddish color typical of Acorn-Fed Ham.

Benefits for the Entire Value Chain

The technology developed benefits all links of the Iberian chain. The consumer gains real traceability through heat maps certifying the montanera. The farmer has a digital tool that facilitates generational renewal and optimizes the use of the Dehesa. COVAP’s Technical Services obtain precise data for personalized advisory. And the animal benefits from management tailored to its real needs, improving its welfare.

“With this project, COVAP reinforces its position not only as the historic guardian of the Acorn-Fed Iberian Pig, but as an undisputed pioneer in AgriTech innovation,” says Emilio de León, Director of Livestock Productions at the Cooperative. “The strategic alliance with Innogando has been fundamental. Its ability to develop precision hardware and algorithms adapted to the extreme demands of the Dehesa has transformed the GEN project’s vision into a tangible reality.”
